Only a handful of architects make names for themselves outside their profession.
Roger Walker is definitely among them.
In a practice spanning more than three decades, he has become noted for his distinctive, highly conceptual yet personable and ultimately very practical buildings. An early example of his unique style in a commercial context was the Willis Street Village.
In recent years he has been a key figure in the resurgence of Wellington inner city living, designing some of the most interesting examples, including Sirocco Apartments, Lone Star Apartments and the Tea Store and james Smith apartments.
Roger has received numerous architectural awards and is now a member of the exclusive New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA College of fellows. The value of his enduring body of work was recognised in 1998 when he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
